The Live-in Caregiver Program helps Canadians to hire foreign nationals as caregivers to children, senior citizens or disabled people. It is a component of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) and is unique within TFWP which gives a pathway to permanent residence. People with 2 years of work permit under the LCP can apply for a permanent residence. While the pathways still exist, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is not issuing new LCP work permits in November 2014.
What Changed and Why
Immigrants who work under The LCP requires to reside in the home they work for, this makes them vulnerable to abuses such as unpaid overtime and poor working conditions. Since their stay in Canada depends on their employer, critics claimed that the program needs to be reformed for better protection of the caregivers.
So, if the Live-in Caregivers chose to move out they will no longer be considered as a part of the Live-in Caregiver Program and not be eligible to apply for a permanent residence under the LCP.
The Live-in Caregiver Program Updates 2017
The Live-in Caregiver Program is now closed for new applicants. If you want to immigrate to Canada and work as a caregiver, you must apply for a regular work permit.
If you already work in Canada on an LCP work permit, you may be qualified to apply for permanent residence through the Caring for Children Program, or the Caring for People with High Medical Needs Program.
