Ontario’s Job Posting Rules to Benefit Newcomer Job Seekers
Updated: December 2025 — What changes take effect on January 1, 2026 and how they support internationally trained workers in finding fair job opportunities in Ontario.
Introduction
Ontario announced important updates in late 2023 aimed at banning the longstanding
“Canadian work experience” requirement from public job ads.
After legislative steps, these changes will officially come into effect on
January 1, 2026.
The purpose of this rule is simple: to make hiring fairer and open more
opportunities for skilled newcomers across healthcare, technology, and other
high-demand sectors.
Key Changes Coming January 1, 2026
1. No Requirement for Canadian Work Experience
Employers can no longer demand “Canadian work experience” in any public job posting or
application form. This reduces barriers that internationally trained workers face when
searching for their first job in Ontario.
2. Salary Range Must be Included
Every job ad must now display a salary range, with a maximum spread of
$50,000.
This helps applicants understand expected pay and prevents unfair or hidden wage practices.
3. Clearer Job Requirements
Employers must clearly list essential job requirements and avoid vague language that
could disadvantage newcomer applicants. This includes specifying mandatory skills,
certifications, and experience.
Why These Changes Matter for Newcomers
Many internationally trained workers struggle to enter the Ontario job market simply
because they lack “Canadian experience” — even when they possess strong overseas
qualifications.
By removing this requirement, Ontario aims to:
- Help skilled newcomers secure jobs faster
- Reduce discrimination in hiring
- Support employers facing labour shortages
- Strengthen Ontario’s workforce with global talent
Which Sectors Benefit the Most?
The new rules are especially helpful in industries where newcomer talent is already
in high demand, such as:
- Healthcare
- Information Technology (IT)
- Engineering & Skilled Trades
- Hospitality & Retail
- Logistics & Transportation
Artificial intelligence disclosures
Covered employers must state in the job ad if they use artificial intelligence (AI) to
screen, assess, or select applicants. This disclosure requirement is intended to make the hiring
process more transparent for candidates.
For newcomers, an AI disclosure can be useful. It signals that the employer may be using software tools
(for example, an Applicant Tracking System or automated resume screener). If AI is used, applicants can
take steps to improve their chance of passing initial automated checks — for example by using clear
headings, standard job keywords, and concise bullet points that match the job description.
Practical tips if a job ad discloses AI use:
- Match keywords and phrases from the job posting in your resume and experience bullets (but keep it natural).
- Use simple, standard headings like Experience, Education, and Skills so ATS tools parse your resume correctly.
- Avoid complex formatting (tables, images, unusual fonts) that can confuse automated systems.
- Include both acronym and full-form of certifications or skills (e.g., “CPR / Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation”).
One caveat: many employers may add a generic AI disclosure even when they only use basic keyword filtering.
That means the same disclosure could cover both simple ATS screening and advanced AI tools that predict a
candidate’s fit. Because of that, the disclosure alone might not reveal how sophisticated the employer’s
system is — but it still gives applicants helpful guidance to optimise their application.
What Newcomers Should Do Next
From January 2026 onward, job seekers should expect clearer, more transparent job
postings. If you notice a job ad still asking for “Canadian experience,” you can
report it to Ontario’s labour authorities.
Newcomers should also:
- Update their resume according to Canadian standards
- Highlight international skills and certifications
- Apply confidently to roles matching their experience
- Use settlement and employment support services available in Ontario
Final Thoughts
Ontario’s new job posting rules are a strong step toward fair employment practices.
By removing barriers like Canadian experience and requiring transparent salary
ranges, the province is making it easier for skilled newcomers to build successful
careers.
