Express Entry Overview

1. About Express Entry

Express Entry is an online platform used to manage the PR applications of skilled workers who wish to become permanent residents of Canada.

Once an interested candidate submits an online profile, the federal government determines if the candidate is eligible for a program managed by Express Entry. Eligible candidates are accepted into the Express Entry pool and are ranked according to the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). The CRS is a points-based system used by the government to assess and rank candidates in the Express Entry pool. The CRS score is calculated based on a candidate’s age, education, work experience, language skills, as well as other factors.

Approximately every two weeks, the Canadian government selects the highest-scoring candidates from the Express Entry pool and provides them with an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence.

ELIGIBILITY FOR EXPRESS ENTRY PROGRAM

1. How I eligible for Express Entry?

To be eligible for Express Entry, candidates must meet the criteria of at
least one of the following federal economic immigration programs:

Federal Skilled Worker Program: The FSWP is
Canada’s primary economic immigration pathway. The minimum
requirements include at least one year of continuous full-time or
equivalent paid work experience in the past 10 years in a skilled
occupation under the National Occupational Classification (NOC)
skill level 0, A, or B.
Validated intermediate or better
language ability in English or French.
For candidates educated outside of
Canada, an educational credential (certificate, diploma, or degree)
and an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) report.
In addition to meeting the FSWP’s
minimum work, language ability, and education requirements,
candidates must also obtain at least 67 points under its points
grid.
Canadian Experience
Class: The CEC provides international students and
foreign workers who have Canadian experience with the opportunity to
obtain permanent residence. Candidates must have obtained at least
one year of skilled, professional, or technical work experience in
Canada within 3 years of the application date and also meet language
proficiency criteria.
Federal Skilled Trades
Program: The FSTP is available to candidates who want
to become permanent residents on the basis of qualifying for a
skilled trade. Eligibility criteria include having a minimum of 2
years of full-time work experience in a skilled trade within the
5-year period of submitting an application; meet the job
requirements of the skilled trade; have a full-time job offer in
Canada for a period of at least 1 year or possess a certificate of
qualification in the skilled trade that has been provided by an
official Canadian authority; and meet language proficiency
criteria.

STEPS TO APPLY FOR

THE EXPRESS ENTRY PROGRAM

1. Complete your ECA

If you have done your education outside Canada, you should get your Educational Credentials Assessment or ECA. The ECA proves that your educational qualifications are equal to those recognized in the Canadian educational system.

2. Complete your language ability tests

The next step is completing the required English language proficiency tests. The minimum score is 6 bands in IELTS equivalent to CLB 7. Your test score should be less than 2 years old at the time of application. You will have an edge over other applicants if you know French. French language test like the Test de evaluation de Francians (TEF) will prove your proficiency in the language.

3. Create your Express Entry profile

You will have to first create your online Express Entry profile. The profile should include details about your age, work experience, education, language skills, etc. You will be given a score base on these details. If you qualify by getting the required points, you can submit your profile. This will be included in the Express Entry pool.

4. Calculate your CRS score

If your profile makes it to the Express Entry pool, it is ranked based on the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score. Criteria such as age, work experience, adaptability, etc. determine your CRS score. Your profile gets included in the Express Entry pool if you have the required CRS score.

5. Get your Invitation to Apply (ITA)

If your profile gets selected from the Express Entry pool, you will get an ITA from the Canadian government after which you can start the documentation for your PR visa.

6. Submit your application for permanent residence:

If you receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA), you will be given 60 days to submit a complete application for permanent residence. During the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants have been given 90 days to complete their application. In this application you will have to provide extensive personal information along with supporting documentation. The entire application is submitted electronically.

After you’ve submitted your application, you have to wait for a final decision to be issued. 80 percent of Express Entry applications are processed in six months or less. If your application is approved, then you will receive authorization to activate your permanent resident status in Canada.

What is the next step after receiving ITA from Canada through Express Entry?

The applicant who receives an ITA must fill the application forms and upload
the
required documents. This is according to the checklist issued by IRCC. They
must
then obtain police clearance, medical reports, and pay the specified fees.
The
specified funds must be shown by them and the application must be submitted
within 60 days.
