What mean by "Minimum Necessary Income" or MNI?
If you are sponsor you need to qualify a minimum level of income to support yourself, your family members, as well as those they wish to sponsor, Canadian government assess your ability through the pre-defined system called “Minimum Necessary Income” or MNI. Only if you meet these you will considered as an eligible sponsor.

The size of the family unit is established based on who is currently being supported by the sponsor in Canada and those they are planning to sponsor. To calculate a family unit, you can include:
- yourself
- your spouse or partner
- your dependent children
- your spouse’s or partner’s dependent children
- any other person you previously sponsored in the past and for whom you’re still financially responsible
- the parents and grandparents you want to sponsor
- your parents and grandparents’ spouse, partner and dependent children
You must also include dependent children, spouse, partner and separated spouses who will not be coming to Canada with your parents or grandparents.

If you wish to sponsor your parent and grandparent you only eligible if you exceed the MNI for three consecutive taxation years, (except in the Quebec) this system ensures that sponsors who bring their elderly members are having stable Income

Kindly Note: To show youmeeting the MNI requirement, potential sponsors need to provide their Notice of Assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) for the past 3 taxation years before applying (2020, 2019 and 2018).
IRCC announced that for the 2020 application intake sponsor revenues will be assessed for the 2020, 2019 and 2018 fiscal years as completed applications are likely to be received in January and February 2021. IRCC will accept applications with only the 2019 and 2018 Notice of Assessment (NOA) and is asking sponsors to submit their 2020 NOAs as soon as it becomes available.

MNI for Family Sponsorship in Quebec
If you are living in Quebec your income requirement is different from other part of Canada. Sponsors are presumed capable of fulfilling an undertaking if, over the past 12 months, they have had gross income from Canadian sources equal to the total of the income appearing in Table 1 and Table 2 below. The income in both tables is indexed each year.
Amounts are in effect from January 1 to December 31, 2021.
