Are you an international student in Canada considering transferring to a different school? You’ve come to the right place! This blog post will guide you through the process of changing your Designated Learning Institution (DLI) while on a study permit.
Why Change DLIs?
There can be various reasons for wanting to switch schools. Maybe your program offering changed, the location isn’t ideal, or you found a better fit elsewhere. Regardless of the reason, Canadian immigration allows international students to transfer DLIs under specific conditions.
When Can You Change DLIs?
There are several points in your study journey when a DLI transfer is possible:
- While your study visa application is in progress
- After your visa is approved but before entering Canada
- After landing in Canada and receiving your study permit
- Before starting your classes
- Even after completing your first semester (though a time limit usually applies)
Important Note: Always check with your current school’s regulations regarding the timeframe for withdrawing from your program.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to inform IRCC about your DLI transfer:
-
Secure a New Offer Letter: This is crucial! Obtain an official acceptance letter from your new college or university.
-
Login to Your GCKey Account: This is the account you used for your study visa application. If you used a consultant, they might have your credentials, but you can also create your own GCKey and link your study permit application.

-
Navigate to the Transfer Section: Once logged in, locate the “Designated Learning Institution Student Transfer” section under “Transfer from DLI number.”
-
Provide Transfer Information: Enter your current study permit application number, new DLI number, new student ID number, and start date at the new school (all found on your new acceptance letter).
-
Review and Submit: Carefully review the details you entered. If everything is accurate, click “Submit Transfer” and then confirm the transfer.
-
Confirmation: You’ll receive an on-screen confirmation that your DLI transfer request is complete.
Remember: Failing to inform IRCC about your DLI transfer can lead to serious consequences, including visa cancellation and difficulties obtaining a work permit after graduation.
Additional Tips:
- Double-check all deadlines and requirements with both your current and new schools.
- Consider seeking guidance from an immigration consultant if needed.
By following these steps and staying compliant, you can successfully transition to your new DLI and continue your educational journey in Canada.
